If your kids have ever asked “but how does that actually work?” and then immediately tried to test it themselves, The Franklin Institute is their natural habitat.
Located in Philadelphia, this nationally recognized science museum blends hands-on exhibits, immersive environments, and live science demonstrations into a full-day experience that feels more like exploration than education.
Where Science Gets Loud, Messy, and Memorable
This is not a look-but-don’t-touch museum. Kids climb through a giant heart, experiment with physics, explore space, and test their strength, balance, and curiosity at every turn.
The exhibits are designed to invite participation, not observation. Expect movement, noise, questions, and a steady stream of “wait, do that again.”
Live Science Shows That Steal the Spotlight
While the exhibits are impressive, the live science shows are what families remember long after the visit. These high-energy demonstrations combine humor, audience participation, and real science in a way that keeps kids completely locked in.
From rapid-fire experiments to explosive demonstrations, these shows turn complex ideas into something kids can see, hear, and feel.
Plan Your Visit Like a Pro
It is nearly impossible to experience everything in a single visit, which is part of the appeal. Choosing a few must-do exhibits or shows ahead of time helps anchor your day while leaving room for discovery along the way.
- Arrive early and check the live show schedule
- Plan 3–5 “must do” experiences
- Expect to adjust as you go
- Wear comfortable shoes and plan for a full day
Accessibility and Membership Perks
The Franklin Institute participates in both the ASTC Travel Passport Program and Museums for All, making it more accessible for many families to visit.
If you are planning multiple museum visits throughout the year, these programs can significantly reduce admission costs.

Rolandbot5000’s Top Pick
There is a reason The Franklin Institute consistently ranks among the top science museums in the country. This place is incredible.
What truly sets it apart are the live science shows. Make time for as many as you can. They are funny, fast-paced, interactive, and genuinely engaging for both kids and adults. We never get tired of them.
Our personal favorites are Ten in 10 and COMBUSTION! Both manage to pack real science, big reactions, and a lot of laughter into a short window, which is no small feat.
It is nearly impossible to see everything in one visit. Go in with a plan, pick a few must-see experiences, and stay flexible. Some of our favorite moments have come from wandering into something unexpected.
The building itself has some tight spaces near the entrance, so larger strollers or wagons can be tricky at first. Once you get further inside, it opens up and becomes much easier to navigate.
Parking in the garage and getting it validated makes the logistics much smoother. Small detail, big impact at the end of a long day.
We also genuinely love the café. It is one of the rare museum stops where buying lunch feels like part of the experience instead of a backup plan.
We visit using the ASTC Passport Program, which makes it much easier to justify a full day, a full lunch, and a second round of “just one more exhibit.”
Plan for a full day, expect your kids to be completely absorbed, and do not be surprised if you leave already talking about when you are coming back.
