A Wild Morning in the Middle of Harrisburg
The seventh annual Run Wild for Wildwood brings runners, walkers and cheering families together for a scenic morning that helps celebrate one of our region’s best free places to explore.
There are road races, and then there are road races where the “road” winds around a lake, past wetlands and along the historic Pennsylvania Canal. On Saturday, August 22, the seventh annual Run Wild for Wildwood 5K & 10K takes over the trails at Wildwood Park for a morning of movement, community and some of the prettiest miles you can cover without leaving Harrisburg.
And here is what makes this one especially fun for families: you do not need to be the person voluntarily running 6.2 miles before breakfast to enjoy it. Bring the kids to cheer, watch the runners come through and soak up the race-day energy. Then, once the Nature Center opens at 10 a.m., turn the morning into a full family outing. The runners get their finish line. The kids get a giant tree to climb through and microscopes to investigate. Everybody wins.
One important race-day note
The 2026 race is full and registration is closed. If you already have a bib, lace up! If you do not, you can still come cheer, support the runners and enjoy Wildwood after the race. The park asks other visitors to plan their visits around the event that morning.
The kind of course that earns its name
The scenic 5K and 10K run/walk uses the Wildwood Way Trail around the lake and the Towpath Trail beside the Pennsylvania Canal. Instead of staring at pavement and mailboxes, participants get trees, water, wetlands and the very real possibility that a bird will look significantly less winded than they do.
The event also brings the community together in support of Wildwood Park. Friends of Wildwood is the nonprofit organization that supports the park, the Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center and environmental education programs that reach more than 10,000 people each year. That means every stride celebrates a local place where families can learn, wander, watch wildlife and breathe a little more deeply all year long.
After the finish line: let the kids run wild, too
When the race wraps up, head to the Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center. Admission is free, and it is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The Exhibit Hall introduces kids to the freshwater wetland and the wildlife that calls it home. Children can climb through the tree diorama, curl up with a book in the children’s library, examine animal artifacts up close and use interactive stations to investigate the tiny details of the natural world.
For little explorers, this is where the “walk through nature” part of the morning becomes a “crawl directly through a tree” adventure. It is hands-on, wonderfully kid-friendly and exactly the sort of place where everyone can investigate at their own pace.
There is also an indoor bird-viewing area with guides, binoculars and interactive resources for kids, plus an observation deck for spotting what is happening outside. In other words, there are plenty of ways to keep exploring even after little legs have declared themselves officially finished with the trail.

Older kids and teens can race if they are already registered, cheer on family members or see what a real trail race looks like.
