Our family tradition (with just enough chaos to keep it interesting)
The Hamid Circus at Zembo Shrine is a family tradition so deeply ingrained in our lives that I fully expect my kids to be reminiscing about it in their old age. Probably while still trying to perfect their clown skills.
Somehow, this circus manages to hit that rare sweet spot. It’s big, exciting, and spectacular… but it’s not the kind of event where I’m calculating how many exits there are and wondering if I should put an AirTag on my child. It’s got all the magic you want, without the overwhelming “I might lose a kid in the crowd and need a second mortgage for concessions” feeling.
And best of all? It’s for a good cause. When was the last time you got to eat popcorn and support a community pillar like the Shriners at the same time?
Big wow, but not overwhelming (hello, sensory-friendly sanity)
I love a big event as much as the next mom, but I also love being able to manage it on my own without turning into a human GPS tracker. Zembo hits that perfect balance: the show feels huge and exciting, but the whole experience still feels doable.
Sensory tip from a mom who gets it: bring headphones or ear protection, and let kids know ahead of time that some acts get loud. You’ll be glad you packed them.

The “did we just SEE that?!” lineup
If your kids love action, this is the kind of show where someone will whisper “WHAT?!” every five minutes. And if your kids love animals, glitter, costumes, and pure theatrical joy… yes.
Affordable enough for popcorn AND the light wand
Can we talk about the real miracle for a second? The Zembo Shrine Circus is one of those rare outings where I can take the whole family and still say yes to popcorn… and maybe even a light wand… without feeling like I just spent our entire yearly “experience budget” in one afternoon.
It’s fun. It’s local. It’s accessible. It’s a yes from me.
Everything we stand for: memories, community, village-building
This is exactly the kind of community tradition I want to keep alive. Local families showing up. Local kids being wide-eyed. Community members supporting the Shriners. It’s a night out that feels like a shared story for Central PA.
We talk a lot at Macaroni KID about building the village. This is what it looks like in real life. You’re not just attending a show. You’re participating in something that makes our community feel connected.
Every year, I joke that I’m finally selling one of the kids to the circus… and every year, I end up bringing them all home.
Mostly because they still need to work on their flexibility. Maybe next year, RidleyLou. Maybe next year.
